We have shortlisted five places to visit in Kerala during summer. While the list is short, we’ve kept it interesting, by making it a mix of varied locations. So, we have on the list destinations with beaches, plantations, wildlife sanctuaries, forests and houseboats.
Munnar is picture-postcard perfect, a visual delight. Covered in lush greenery, this quaint little town nestles in the verdant forests of the Western Ghats. The Western Ghats are a mountain range, and Munnar stands at an elevation of over 1500 above mean sea level. Ambient temperatures at that height are always cool and pleasant. The rising mist, from the valleys below, create a mesmerising environment.
Munnar is famous for tea plantations, lakes, waterfalls and nature trails. You can visit tea plantations, some of which offer guided tours and walk you through the tea manufacturing process. Wildlife safaris at the Eravikulam National Park, venture into the depth of the reserve forest, and we recommend you make this trip.
There are other places of interest, in and around Munnar, worth a visit, some of which are Muniyara Dolmens, Anamudi, Attukal waterfalls, Mattupetty dam, Devikulam, Echo point, Nyayamakad, Pothemadu and Photo Point.
Places To Stay In Munnar
Abad Copper Castle – A stunning property surrounded by lush green hills, with a waterfall on one side, Abad Copper Castle is almost dreamlike. The property has forty well-appointed rooms, equipped with modern amenities. Breakfast is included as part of the stay. The facility has an ayurvedic centre, a spa and steam room. They also organise tours for inhouse guests.
Not far from Munnar, is another beautiful location called Thekkady. Also, located in the Western Ghats, Thekkady is situated at an altitude of 900 metres above sea level. Thekkady is part of the reserve forest, close to the internationally acclaimed Periyar Tiger Reserve. This is one location where you are most likely to spot a tiger in the wild.
Thekkady is famed for spice plantations, some of which allow visitors, for a nominal fee. In house spice stores, sell organically grown spices. An activity that you are likely to enjoy here is bamboo rafting on the Periyar lake. Bamboo rafts are indigenous rafts, made from bamboo. The lake is an ideal place to spot wildlife, particularly, elephants, wild boar and deer.
Gavi forest is another place we recommend. And if you have the time you must visit Pandikuzhi, Vandiperiyar, Mangala Devi temple, Chellarkovil viewpoint and Ramakalmedu.
Places To Stay In Thekkady
Abad Green Forest – Cocooned amid wilderness the Abad Green Forest is a luxury resort, with twenty jungle cottages and thirty jungle rooms. Houseboats cruise along the backwaters and halt at safe locations, for the night. There is a cook on board, who prepares meals. It is quite an experience because the houseboat crosses villages and paddy fields as it meanders through the backwaters.
